for some songs, the cutie voice worked, e.g chulip, sakuranbo. Rocket sneaker sounds like a pretty cool songs and i think the cutie voice kinda ruined it a little bit.

anyone think so?

Well, it's her song, so it's she who decides which voice to use in her own song.
I like the song as it is. Smile

I'm not really a fan of that voice so I don't really get into any of her songs which are like that...occasionally I might get into one that's really catchy but I tend to get bored of those quickly too...

I kind of got that vibe from Rocket Sneaker too but it's hard for me to imagine her singing it another way. I see what you're getting at though.

Personally I said it before and I will say it again, I think Ai needs vocal training. Her voice lacks power and depth which really narrows the range of songs she can do.

I disagree. Well for starters it's not the best voice ever, but that goes without saying. I think it's just the way her music is produced. If you listen to Sakuranbo live studio version, and material on LOVE PUNCH, with songs like Ame no Naka no MELODY, Shabondama, she shows how powerful voice can be. I don't know why but her album tracks since LOVE PUNCH haven't been as much impactful as the ones on her debut album.

She sings with a high voice, but even people like ayumi or namie don't have a really wide range, and they do fine. I think vocally, Kumuriuta was one her more impressive songs.

Then I guess we have to agree about disagree. I dunno, I think her voice lacks a certain depth, and I'm not talking about her high notes. Maybe my person reference of voices have changed from the less squeaky and high-pitched to lower and richer. *shrug* When I listen to pockets, especially during her high notes, all I can think about is that it would have been more powerful.

While she does decently in shabon Dama (which in my opinion is not a hard song to sing), I feel that she shows vocal weakness during her more challenging songs.

(I dunno, maybe it's just my changed preference towards lower voices, or maybe it's the fact that I've been disappointed with her work since Yumekui might also play a factor *shrug)

All know I am admire Otsuka very much, more than almost anyone, but I agree and_etude and this is not some uncommon idea in Japanese entertainment. All professional performers need coach and teachers, this is fact, no matter they are established and famous. Especially truth for singer and songwriter! who always wishes to expand her capability! please consider Izumi Sakai who is certainly one fine model for Otsuka and all of us! and she continued study and improvement entire her life. Amuro does same with vocal and dance coaching. Creative talent is natural from the god but skill is learned and taught and practiced.

it is clear to me that Ai has had professional vocal training, based on her breathing, enunciation and how much she opens her mouth. (my sister has had singing lessons from a teacher who coaches opera singers, so i know something about this.)

"power and depth" is not a measure of quality. control is.

it is entirely possible that Ai has been advised not to "belt out" songs so much, to avoid straining her voice. after all, her voice is a rather valuable commodity.

I also had singing lessons, and I dunno, it seems to me that she's getting the power behind her singing from her throat and not her diaphram (and I'm basing this on the fact that she tend to give out really audible gasps of breathing. Utada Hikaru had this problem too)

Control is one aspect, but projection is also another, but I guess pop singing is a little different than broadway singing.

*shrugs* I'm just saying this based on what I learned. I don't think she's an absolutely horrible vocalist, I like the fact that she has good control, but I think there's also great room for improvement.

On topic, I think that the way Ai sung Rocket Sneaker was suited to it. Like Jester said, it's difficult to imagine it sung differently. The way she hit some of those high notes bothered me, but not much. Plus the lives she's performed for this song so far have sounded really nice Giggle

As for Ai's voice, there's always room for improvement! And one of the reasons I like Ai's voice is because she conveys emotion exceptionally, and that gives the song depth. For example, Hitomi Shimatani has had an excellent voice since she started, but many of her early ballads just bore me (recent ones are much better). Shabondama had me in tears from the very first listen. Smile

Actually pop singing and broadway singing there is rather a great difference between the two... I dun have any professional singing expereice or training.. But i feel tat Ai do have power in her voice, just tat certain songs dun bring it out.. and like some have say if she strained her voice it will be very bad..

And i think Ai has engaged professional help in vocal aspects, becuz from her first live till now, dun u all think that she has improved alot? especially from her first single, her live was terrible, but now her live are all very high standard..

Even certain singers that are very powerful rock singers, some also dunno if they continue to sing in the manner they will damage the voice... that is wat i heard and see in a singing contest though.. haha cheers =)

I don't see why she should have to sound more "powerful" or anything, it's her own style and it sounds great the way it is.

She has her voice and we like it . cannot judge if yes or not she needs voice training.
Her voice is natural and she has her powerful .
I don't undestand why she should have to sound more powerful too .
