Rocket Sneaker not is a "original" video, Why? well.....because basically is the same idea of "YUKI" Promotional Video "Sentimental Journey" (2003.02.19)...and i think than that video Rocket Sneaker is very good, have awesome effects...but...the central idea is originally of YUKI..in the 2003...but think than Sentimental Journey is many better, because is a video more prepared...and the movement is much more fluid....

From the looks of it, the director's intention was to have the same look/effect of this video.
lol it's creepy how well they made Ai look like her/how much she looks like Ai. |

a similar technique is also used in a Coca Cola CM. but a difference is the Yuki one and the Coca Cola CM have a lot of extras dressed up the same (see the endings). with the Rocket Sneaker PV, the images of Ai are all overlaid in the one frame. technically, i think this would have presented some problems when the camera is moving. but it is all done seamlessly so whatever technical issues may have existed were overcome.
you could even make a connection with all of these videos to The Matrix movies. |

Thanks for posting about the PV, po-po!
[I fixed your link for you...]
My mind immediately went to it too, but I couldn't for the life of me remember the artist name or the title...
As pon-pon points out, at the end of Sentimental Journey, we see that the PV tableau was constructed with many extras all in identical costumes and wigs.
Based on the flow of Rocket Sneaker (especially when the camera spins and goes back over the line of 'Ai's) I believe the PV was made by using what's called Motion Control Photography.
The camera's path is recorded digitally and thus can be exactly repeated, making overlays of images and special effects possible. If this technique was indeed used, for each 'Ai' we see, she would have stood in that pose in that spot for the duration of the PV while the camera moved around her. When the camera finished, she moves to the next spot and again the camera takes the same path as before. After filming her in each spot, they compile all the 'Ai's together. Since the camera movements were identical each time, everything matches up.
Hopefully there will be a 'Making of' clip. Out of all her PVs, this PV (however it was made) should really have one.
Both PVs are impressive products, Ai's being technological and YUKI's for directorial orchestration.
Concerning concept, though, I also believe there are some core differences between the two PVs.
YUKI's PV, to me, appears to look at how people pass through time/life, examining each split second. I feel like she is asking us to re-examine our own lives and try to cherish it all for it eventually comes to an end and we're missing the journey.
Ai's PV, however, appears to be not so much concerned with the tiny moments in time, but rather the idea of moving through space. She's on a walk, on and off of Earth's surface, interacting with things she encounters (even herself jumping overhead at one point). It's as if Ai is saying, 'Message received,' to YUKI and is going ahead and living in the moment, embracing the present-day. |

| I agree that the similarities between "Rocket Sneaker" PV to YUKI's PV and the Coca-Cola CM is obvious. But I think I had seen this type of presentation in other works before too. Maybe someone can clarify this? Anway I made a search on the web and found out that actually the director of YUKI's PV and the Coca-Cola CM is the same person by the name of Nagi Noda. But the director for "Rocket Sneaker" is a different guy. Since both of the director are Japanese, it is likely that there is a mutual consent between the two directors for the style of the presentation of their works. |

| ^ What makes you say that? And I'm assuming that you're just taking about the song and not PV. |

The Cola ad, YUKI's video, and Ai-chan's video are all directed by the same person: Nagi Noda.
I prefer YUKI's video because it is more fitting; the whole song and video itself is a journey, as the song suggests. It was also Nagi Noda's first time using the stop motion animation for the video, and has an autheticity that I like. Not that I'm saying I dislike Ai-chan's video or anything; it's good, but I just think that YUKI's is better.
EDIT: Oh sorry, I just saw the fact that Nagi Noda was director was addressed. But was the Ai-chan version really directed by another guy?? I thought it was still Nagi Noda stuff.... |

Nagi Noda isn't the director of Ai-chans new PV. pon pon mentioned the director from the screen capture. You can easily view all the pv directors at Spaceshower.tv site under each video of the artist. =)
And zyzzyva, I love/like how you add so much indepth concentration and resources for your points. You never seem to fail me with your insight, always alot to read from you. I agree with you that YUKI's video is more of that time concept. Never seen the PV till now however never enjoyed YUKI's post JOY music too much. BTW, I think YUKI's and Ai's personalities match. They are both fun and have funny PV's. However I prefer Ai more then YUKI. |

| Wow is it just me or does Ai and Yuki look like really similar (facial wise) during the first few moments? You can't really say that Ai or Yuki or anyone isn't making an "original" video. I mean of course they probably saw this idea and reused it, but the idea of taking the pictures frame by frame has been used by many videos and photographs before it. It's more of a style than just the idea of one pv/etc. |
