Ai Otsuka, Puffy to be guests at Avril concert
Thu, July 3, 2008 (12:39am EDT)
Popular musician Avril Lavigne has already worked together with pop duo Puffy, and now she will be teaming up with singer Ai Otsuka as well. When Avril returns to Japan for a concert at the Tokyo Dome on September 16, both Puffy and Ai Otsuka will be making guest appearances on stage.
Avril remarked that she wanted her show to be like a "rock party." Puffy was a natural choice as a guest, as she and producer Butch Walker previously worked with the duo on the song "All Because of You," released this past May. Ai Otsuka is said to have been chosen due to her status as a symbol of the "girls rock" scene.

*cough* what happened to their good relationship with YUI? why not her instead of Ai, it doesn't make sense really LOL
but anyways...looks like we're expecting our next single real soon, and there will be a team up with Avril Lavigne...hmm interesting combination
Otsuka Ai x Avril Lavigne
or
Avril Lavigne x Otsuka Ai
or
Otsuka Ai feat. Avril Lavigne
or

I don't believe a word of this, nor do I want to! Avril is complete and utter crap. |

ewwwwwwwwww. Other than this may bring Ai-chin some more recognition in Canada/US, this is not a pleasant thought. I kind of hope its not true...
Also! If any popular female japanese singer represents rock, its Shiina Ringo. |

Ouch. I love Avril Lavigne. She is one of the female rock geniuses who can just write whatever she wants.
And tommykabby..... I think Avril and Ai make an interessting combination. I don't really know if you like Chulip you guys but that is so Avril sound. Although of course there are many other choices than Ai. Like you said Ms. Ringo. |

Trust me, it's not the best combination...nor a good one...Ai-chan barely even sings rock, whatever Avril had in mind..... |

My thoughts too!
Seriously, though, I wouldn't want YUI to perform with her either. Actually I don't want any respectable artist too. I'm sorry, I'm not into the whole idea of "rock artist having others write her songs". It isn't right to me. In my opinion, it's fine for pop, because for pop you are debuting as an idol for personality/looks/etc. are actually a big focus. But for rock isn't it about being yourself? |

Hmm, This is intriguing. I'm really interested what would this combination be.
I don't know how Ai chan is considered a symbol of girls rock. |

^ I agree. I always thought of her as a pop-artist with Cherish being the only one-off rock song that she wrote. Actually, I think she could have the potential to do well in rock if she chose to do so, considering that Cherish was just fantastic (the recording at least anyway).
If AI and Avril do collaborate however, I think it could end up being a total disaster though, like Koda Kumi and Fergie with 'That ain't cool'. I'd rate that amongst some of the crappiest songs I've ever heard and Koda's english was just bleagh. I'm kinda hoping that Ai isn't gonna repeat that. To see her sing an entire english song is already bad enough but then to have her english compared against a fluent speaker will kill her. |

even if Ai-chan was fluent...doesn't mean the song is going to be good...
take Yuna Ito and Celine Dion collaboration...I hated that collaboration because it just didn't seem to fit because Celine's voice was so deep that you can barely hear Yuna's voice.
But looking at another perspective, at her good friend Suzuki Ami. She performed with Aly and AJ on a half English and half Japanese song, I find that song pretty enjoyable
As long as Ai-chan doesn't sing or barely sings in English, it's perfectly fine... |

Uh...whaaa? This is...surprising, to say the least. I've never really thought of Ai as a rock artist (or Avril for that matter, but I guess she doesn't fit into any other category). Although I did like the Sabakan thing for Tokyo Friends, but that's more indie rock, not Avril's style. This should prove to be interesting. |

I did a quick scheme on the original Japanese article. But I was only pick up a few words (and not 100% sure it's correct either).
Quote: 大塚愛はアヴリルと同様、自国のガールズロック・シーンを象徴する存在。楽曲の世界観が、女性に強く支持されている点でも共通している。
The first sentence said that Ai gives a rock girl scene image. While the second sentence said that through her song's world view, it gives a strong women persona that Avril found similar to her music.
There's no mention of a collaboration single, just that Ai is looking forward to the join live performance.
My guess is they're using this live to test people's reaction to their collaboration. If the audience respond is more positive, I think they'll consider taking it the next step and put out a single together. |

Whether you like Avril Lavigne or not, it's pretty damn cool that she wants to introduce Ai Otsuka's music to a lot of people who have never heard of her.
If this is true, it's great news for Ai-chin, dayo. |

I'd rather have Ai save her pride than resort to Avril!
For some odd reason Avril is really big in Japan. The Best Damn Thing was a million seller and she is doing an arena tour in Japan in October, and is playing to Tokyo Dome to finish the Japanese tour.
This can't be true~ Ai is a 100% pop singer. Songs like Cherish, Kuroge....., 5:09am aren't even what you call rock songs! |
