i think the "girls rock" referred to Sakuranbo...Happy Days...Pon Pon...U-Boat...
it's not ROCK rock...its similar to Avril's Girlfriend...but it's just different in style |

I think it is not about whether Ai is a rock or pop singer, but it is her charisma, characteristic, on stage performance and the image that is shown to the public made Avril think that she have that rock image. (Maybe Avril do not find that YUI has all these? It is up to personal preference anyway, it is difficult to define.)
similar to her music, doesnt mean rock to rock, but the feeling (maybe the lyrics) that Avril found similar. Moreover both female singers write their own songs, maybe that's why Avril took notice of Ai?
Anyhow, if this is true, it is good publicity for Ai chan =] |

as for the comments about pop and rock, i have always found the border between the two vague and arbitrary. i would say Sk8ter boi is a catchy and well crafted pop song, like Sakuranbo is.
when i was recently in Thailand i picked up the DVD of Avril Lavigne 2005 Live at Budokan (along with a heap of other stuff). i have never even as much as downloaded any Avril music, but i thought her concert DVD was ok, and worth another viewing. being 3 years ago she would have had less material to draw on and it showed in the concert. some songs were a bit weak. but in general, i dont see any incompatibility between Ai's and Avril's music.
i am all in favour of collaborations. it is a way for an artist to expand their range and develop further. |

Hmmm...sounds really interensting....i think it would be great to listen Ai and Avril together..haha...but I can't believe this is true untill i listen to it..  ...xD
Ai has some songs with a "rock" sound (Superman, Happy Days, pon pon, yumekui, katorisenkou, tsukune 70 yen) ....and i think she would be great singing rock.....like she did singing for Tokyo Friends.

but they can't be called pop songs neither.... ...I think Ai mixes different music styles in her songs....she sings pop but also mixes rock sounds and blues in some songs...

Yes I totally agree with HilaryDuffFanboy... I mean... come on! What happened to good old rock'n'roll? (Ok I was joking there) But I guess it just kind of depends. Some of the kids at school hear MTV pop-rock then go around saying they listen to hard emotive-metal bands... soo... I guess it just depends. To a person adjusted to listening to rock, Ai would seem ultimately only pop, and to a person mostly adjusted to pop, they would be able to see slight hints of pop-rock...?
Wow everyone here has been so protective over Ai's reputation and her English! May I remind you Avril has sang (or tried) in Japanese before? How do we know she's not the one to break the language barrier? |

Well, Ai's Official Site has confirmed her participation as a "Guest Act"--no mention of a collaboration.
Personally, I hope it remains to be "Guest Act" only. I do not wish to offend the Avril fans here, but she is far from a favorite of mine.  
<EDIT: Upon re-reading the OP, the text of the brief article doesn't appear to imply anything beyond a joint concert. Without any additional specifics, 'teaming up' is merely a slightly more interesting/colloquial way of introducing the info. >
As far as the Pop vs. Rock discussion, I was also a bit surprised, but not it's not completely out of the blue. I would definitely call Ai's music 'Pop,' though more specifically 'J-Pop,' due to the distinctive nature of Japanese Pop music (tending towards cuteness, but also more traditionally 'Pop' [up-tempo & ballads] than the current Western Hip Hop-influenced counterparts).
Avril's music is really more 'Pop Rock' than 'Rock,' so grouping them in the same tour/concert doesn't seem so bizarre. I'd be more shocked if it was announced that Ai was going to sing with the Rolling Stones.
As pon pon rightly pointed out, the dividing line is quite blurry.
A big reason for that is 'Pop' isn't so much of a style as a category of music, shortened from 'Popular.'
As a result, it's a bit hard to pin down a definitive definition/criteria, but you often know when you hear it. Or rather, see it on the charts.

I think a good example would be Aerosmith's [only] #1 hit single, I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (the theme song from the movie, Armageddon).
While Aerosmith is undeniably 'Rock,' that song, due to it's more mainstream [<-keyword] style and lyrics, is totally 'Pop,' at most, 'Pop Rock.'

For some odd reason Avril is really big in Japan. The Best Damn Thing was a million seller and she is doing an arena tour in Japan in October, and is playing to Tokyo Dome to finish the Japanese tour.

Odd reason?! I think it's odd for you Hillaryduff Fanboy because you like pop. That Album was a top seller here when it was released.
Ai is not really a hundred percent pop. Songs like Sakuranbo for example is like Avril's Girlfriend. But anyways people have different opinions so..... |

You can't know, just from the word "pop", what something sounds like, but you can very easily call something "pop". It's not so much a genre as a bucket for all the stuff that doesn't exactly fit into a specific genre.
The reason "pop" is impossible to define as a genre is that the popular music of any period combines elements from various styles that are popular at that point in time, in order to create something that appeals to a wider audience. The actual styles that are "borrowed" to make pop songs, change constantly over the course of time.
Although we now have "rock stars" and huge marketing engines that make people world famous, the concept of pop is not really new. Even famous composers like Mozart and Chopin borrowed a lot of melodies from the folk music of their time, and worked them into their pieces. It gave the people something to relate to, and made their music more popular, in exactly the same way that pop music does now. |

except no one liked that collaboration...all it gained was attention from the media. Did you know how much hype it generated when Yuna Ito and Celine Dion were gonna sing a duet? And then the Fergie and Koda collaboration, it was one horrible song.
What HiliaryDuffFanboy is trying to say...is that these collaborations with western artists are just extremely horrible and this might ruin Ai-chan's reputation
If avex is smart enough to make that song as a B-side, it could possibly end up doing fine like Koda Kumi's MOON |

^ I don't think it would ruin Ai's reputation, per se. I mean, the Fergie x Koda collaboration was pretty much to help put Koda's career back on track after the whole suspension incident. I doubt that they put much effort into that song.
With Yuna and Celine, it wasn't a terrible collab. It was a very sweet song, if not exactly to my taste. But it was much better than "That Ain't Cool". It all depends on what Avril and Ai intend to do. A song like 'Girlfriend' wouldn't be that bad, because it's something both of them could pull off. |

which song? as has been pointed out, there is no mention of a song so far, in any of the news items or the offiical website. (unless there is something written in Japanese i am not aware of.) all that has been mentioned is:- "guest act"
- "teaming up"
- "take part in [a] concert"
- "guest appearances on stage"
a collaboration resulting in a song is only speculation at the moment. although it is possible it may happen at some point in the future. |
