LOVE LETTER

ROMAJI
Koi no you na ai no you na
Yasashiku furete miru
Anata wa honnori atatakai
Shiawase arigatou

Tsuki hi to tomo ni kizuna ga dekita
Mou konna ni toki ga tatte
Odayaka ni anata no seichou wo mita

Koi no you na ai no you na
Yasashiku furete miru
Anata wa honnori atatakai
Shiawase arigatou

Tameiki morashite
Shita wo muita himawari ni nattara
Atashi no namae yonde
Omoidashite furete mite
Atashi no negao me wo samashi
Daikishimeru you

Koi no you na ai no you na
Yasashiku furete miru
Anata wa honnori atatakai
Shiawase arigatou

TRANSLATION
Much like affection; like love
Gently touching to see
You're just slightly warm
I'm happy now, thank you

We also have ties to that month
I have so much time
And you grew modestly

Much like affection; like love
Gently touching to see
You're just slightly warm
I'm happy now, thank you

A superficial sighing
You looked down on the sunflower *
You called my name
I tried to remember the touch
I wake up to the sleeping face
And I held it

Much like affection; like love
Gently touching to see
You're just slightly warm
I'm happy now, thank you

* I take 'sunflowers' to mean 'something much more beautiful than what it really is'.

Edit: added official lyrics and a new translation

Thanks for the lyrics!!!!
I have a question....しあわせ ありがとう doesn't mean something like "thanks for making me happy"???
I know that the context in japanese is very ambigouos....but I always translate first to spanish (my language)..and In spanish it sounds better like "thanks for making me happy"..(literally: "thanks for happiness")
To say "A happy thank you" wouldn't be "shiawase na arigatou"???

"na" isn't always needed. "na" only ADDS to the confirmation that the object is in fact that adjective. however, it can also mean that. maybe one of the words is written in katakana, like 'しあわせ アリガトウ' so there's already emphasis there, that'd probably be clearer. Because there's adjectives like those, it's interpreted different ways. you could be right.

I think the line youre not sure about is:

穏やかにあなたの成長をみた
odayaka ni anata no seichou wo mita
I saw how you calmly grew

^You're welcome... Giggle
Could you put the kanji separated from the romaji like the other lyrics threads?....that way it's easier to sing Laughing
Thanks Smile

I really like the lyrics, everytime I read them I see a lonely Ai sitting on a bench and singing with tears in her eyes Love ... Well, I think at the row "月人ともに 絆が出来た" she mean the moon, because that would fit with the rest of the lyrics... or something like that...

Umm, I'll side with Rodri here. "na" is actually necessary if you want to say 'a happy thank you' (but if you really think about it, it doesn't really make any sense does it?). 'しあわせ アリガトウ' has two interpretations: "Thank you for this happiness you gave me" or "I'm happy now, thank you" which in effect, are actually the same thing.

Otherwise...for a first translation, you did quite well. My translations were also like that when I first started...it was always a little clunky and close to the literal meaning. Anyway, here are a few tips:

  • Stick to one meaning. Don't do things like 'control/moderate' or 'moon/month' because not only can it confuse the reader, it shows you don't know what you're doing either. Make a decision as to what you think suits your interpretation of the lyrics the most. If you really can't decide, select the one you like more. If you're wrong, someone will eventually let you know and you can face it, then move on.

  • As I mentioned before, your translation still feels clunky. That's not really a problem because clearly you have only just begun. Hell, I still feel like I make clunky sounding translations at times. Anyway, the key to making a translation sound good is selecting the equivalent meaning in English, not replacing the phrase word for word. You may find yourself having to change the lines around in order to achieve a greater sense of flow in your translation which is perfectly cool; your job is to provide the meaning of the lyrics, not teach Japanese. This may take some time to get used to...I remember stubbornly resisting that concept when I first started but with practise, you come to realise this fact.

Not sure what else I can offer at this stage so yeah, just keep it up and practise hard! And take my word for it btw...I learnt it the hard way Wink I hope to have another translating buddy here sometime soon...you'd be surprised where the works we provide can end up Smile
