Hero
Starring Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Zhang Ziyi, Tony Leung, and Maggie Cheung
(These are some of China's finest actors in contemporary Chinese films today.)
I'm sure some of you have already heard of it. I don't know how many people here like martial arts action, but even if you don't, you may find this movie very interesting. The movie takes place in China during a time of war with one empire that seems to be the absolute power throughout the land. The emperor has been ruthless in his puruit for conquest and many want to kill him, so the emperor is willing to offer gold and land to the one who can get rid of 3 of the land's most assassins. One man (Jet Li) has completed the task and the movie tells of how he defeated the warriors.
It may sound like your regular Chinese martial arts film, but the most interesting thing about the movie is not the fighting, but the use of visual elements and compelling plot that makes you wonder what will happen next. I don't want to spoil details, but in this movie when you think you've got the plot figured out, the movie will just laugh in your face and go, "Ha! I got you!!!" |

I watched this a while ago. I mostly liked it but I had a few issues with it, like some of the visual effects.
I really don't like flying/running on air or whatever, the stuff introduced in Crouching Tiger and I don't remember if Hero did that too but I seem to think so. And I remember moments when the movie would show a really really densely packed flight of arrows...too dense to be humanly possible. But I liked the story. And most of the visual effects. |

| I've been watching movies like this for a long time, so I don't mind it. Sometimes it's nice to just get away from the laws of physics every once in a while. It would be so cool if somehow we traveled to China and started seeing flying people in the trees below us. |

| "Hero" is one of those movies which leave you mesmerised. Beautiful imagery, complex plotline, fantastic acting. And the technique was simply amazing. They provide you with possible endings and lead you into the minds of the characters. I especially loved the excellent acting of Jet Li. |

| I´ve just seen it. I must say that I had to think about it for a while to understand the main meaning. I like these films which contains both action and interesting thoughtful story. The actors were perfect, settings great... Really enjoyed it.. |

I'm glad you liked it. It's one of my favorites next to Grave of the Fireflies. You might like House of Flying Daggers if you liked that one. There was this one movie that I really didn't like called The Promise. It looks all flashy and everything and looks like an attempt to create a beautiful CG cinematic experience, but the story was too weak, and the characcters weren't really too likeable or memorable except for this one dude. He fights the main character throughout the movie, and then for some reason he gives him a hug. Not bear hug or a hug like brothers would give. He gave a... lover's hug.
Well anyway, it seemed like they created the CG sequences first and then tried to loosely relate them with a weird story.
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the impression it left on me. |

Hero is a great film. Christopher Doyle did a great job as the cinematographer.

I think Hero gets away with all that stuff because you never really know if the story you are watching is true or not. The rooftop chase in Crouching Tiger did overdo it though. |

Great movie. Pretty much cause it has Tony Leung in it. Kidding. Although I love that guy. Which is sort of disturbing since he''s like older than my dad. But I love him like an icon. Anyway, Tony Leung did a fantastic job as Broken Sword. If anyone else was impressed with his performance, I'd recommend Infernal Affairs (the movie The Departed is based on) for a similar serious role and The Duke of Mount Deer if you'd like to see him years younger and in a completely different role.
Jet Li played his role excellently. I think it's one of the best in his career. The effects and colors were beautiful as well. Loved how they applied the appropriate color for each version of the story. Red, the color of passion, for the love mess between the three assassins and Broken Sword's disciple, for example. And white, the absence of all colors, to show the true story. |

You are so right about Tony Leung, Infernal Affairs is such a great series, he's also in the third one... the fight scene with Donnie Yen and Jet Li is worth the price of admission... this is a very good movie, but to be honest, most Chinese/HK martial arts movies are, if you ever get the chance, check out any Bruce Lee movies, now he certainly had no peers! |
