It seems this year Ai is going to release 3 DVDs. She has already released two, one more should be on its way in a few months time.
Yet she has only released one single this year. And that was a recut, so that doesn't even count as "new material".

Is anyone else perplexed as to what iss going on?
I understand Ai is not raking in the yen as much for avex as she once did, but I find it quite odd that there's been no talk at all of a new single. Ai usually debuts a new single during the latter half of a tour, and I was almost sure she would perform a new single in the encore of the arena tour, but it doesn't seem likely now.

For some reason I really do think there will be a single on 09/09/09, but that would mean we would wait a year since the last original single, Kurage, Nagareboshi. To me, she must release a single in summer. She probably needs something like PEACH with a good drama tie in...

Anyhow, the more I think about it, the more I am pondering the possibility of a 'break' or hiatus. There has been some speculation on the forum already.
- She said in the Nagoya stop of LL Tour she didn't know when she'd see them again (you can take that in a few ways though, maybe she meant a-nation, since she isn't on the line up for the Nagoya show)
- The subtitle of Live House tour being a channel shutting down
- The slowing down of releases
- The latest single being called 'Bye Bye'
- The last 2 songs on the setlist of Live House Tour are Mirai Taxi and Yumekui. One talks about going towards the future and the other is about chasing your dreams. Maybe Ai has dreams/non-music goals she wants to pursue?

But of course she is going on a-nation so it doesn't seem like she'll disappear in the next few months.

Maybe I'm thinking too much. Surprised But yes, I'd find it quite interesting if she rounds off 2009 with more DVD releases than singles. Laughing

Thoughts anyone?

  1. probably
  2. because that is the trend
  3. no idea

you may not realise it, but when the anticipated Arena tour DVD is released, she will have released as many singles as DVDs since the LOVE COOK Tour DVD. this has been a developing trend. after the initial burst of singles up to Planetarium, the single releases have slowed down, but the DVD releases have sped up. i graphed this a while ago, and now i just updated the graph.

with declining album sales across the music industry, it makes me wonder if avex now regard concert DVDs as their main product, with albums to provide content for the concert, and singles for promotion. in an age of recycling, concert are great! you reuse all the old songs and you can do so over and over again. no expensive recording studio time required. i am guessing that the concerts are designed to cover their costs with the ticket sales and the profits come from the merchandise and DVDs.

your thoughts about the last 2 songs on the setlist are quite imaginative. i think i lack the imagination to make such a connection. but it does make me wonder if you listen to songs backwards at half-speed to find secret messages! Giggle

^Haha no I don't listen to songs backwards at half speeds to look for satanic messages. I just thought that there would have been an interesting reason to end the encore of the tour with the two songs she used to open the LOVE PiECE tour. She always ends tours with more "iconic" or "symbolic" songs if you know what I mean.

I really doubt avex regards DVDs as the main product, as even artists like Ayumi Hamasaki, Namie Amuro and Koda Kumi either struggle to get to 90k or dont sell much above it. Keep in mind the highest selling female solo singer DVD is only around 300k copies. They do try and make some of the money back with the DVDs priced at rather high prices, but definitely not a major source of income in my eyes, they sell more singles which cost much less to create, and electronic downloads allow them to cut costs and make higher profits too.

another way to look at the ending of the Live House concert is that we are only in the intermission of the LOVE LETTER Tour. Part 2 - the Arena concert DVD is still to come. when taken together, the ending of this concert may seem more logical.

i dont know if singles would cost much less to create than DVDs. there is all the studio time, musicians and technicians for the duration of the recording, which includes the b side(s). a DVD recording is a one day event. manufacturing, packaging and distribution would be about the same for both.

where the big gain comes from is the high price of the DVD. say for example you compare a $10 single selling 200k copies to a $50 DVD selling 100k, with the manufacturing cost of for both being $5 per unit.

single
sales 200k x $10 = $2,000,000
cost 200k x $5 = $1,000,000
profit = $1,000,000

DVD
sales 100k x $50 = $5,000,000
cost 100k x $5 = $1,000,000
profit = $4,000,000

you would need to sell 800k singles to make the same profit as 100k DVDs. which would be easier to achieve? ok, those figures may be rubbery, but they highlight the principle. thats why the bias in the DVD releases make sense to me.

meh.. it won't be surprising if she intends to slow down for now, considering she's pretty much educated, and has talents other than just singing. she definitely have lots of other interests and things she wanaa explore.

what will be surprising is if she actually stops singing Embarassed meh.. i'll be erm.. speechless.

then again, with all the effort for a "new direction", i don't think she'll stop soon.

Oh yikes, the DVD releases this year was terrible, and we hardly got any new music. -___-

I hope next year won't be Part 2 of what happened this year!
